Dr Canavan is an Assistant Professor in Immunology and course co-ordinator for the Postgraduate Diploma in Immune Therapies in the School of Medicine and School of Biochemistry and Immunology. Dr Canavan is also head of the Translational Immunopathology research group in TCD where her lab investigates the early innate immune mechanisms which drive the onset and progression of Rheumatic diseases such as Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA). Her research ambition is to identify and implement novel treatment strategies in early RA patients in an effort to reduce disease burden, pain and disability amongst patients. This research approach is strengthened by ongoing collaboration with the Molecular Rheumatology and St Vincent’s University Hospital EULAR Centre of Excellence research groups as well as collaboration with clinicians, translational scientists, patients, and industry partners. To date Dr Canavan has received independent funding from the Irish Research Council, the Centre for Arthritis and Rheumatic Diseases and the American Association of Immunologists in addition to receiving awards of excellence from the Irish Society of Rheumatology. Finally, Dr Canavan sits on the board of Directors for the Irish Cancer Society and the Centre for Arthritis and Rheumatic Diseases as well as holding a number of editorial positions in Rheumatology related journals (Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases, BMC Rheumatology & Frontiers in Medicine).
