Dr Leonie Fleige

Leonie is a postdoctoral researcher in the Molecular Rheumatology group. She completed
her PhD in Neuroimmunology under the supervision of Prof. Silvia Capellino at IfADo in
Dortmund, Germany. During her PhD, she investigated the dopaminergic pathway in human
immune cells, both under normal conditions and during chronic inflammation, with a
particular focus on sex-specific differences. She collaborated closely with the
Rheumazentrum Ruhrgebiet in Herne.
Leonie has been recognized for her research, receiving the “GEBIN Early Career Research
Award 2022,” a scholarship to attend the EPN Autumn School on “The lung-brain axis in
health and disease,” and a fellowship for a two-month research stay at INEM in Paris in the
group of Prof. Simon Fillatreau. During this time, she investigated the role of B cells and the
dopaminergic system in rheumatoid arthritis.
Currently, her work focuses on the PD-1 pathway in T cells and its role in the development of
rheumatoid arthritis.
